PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The main idea of the proposal for the Rehabilitation of the CMD, is the enhancement of the value of the existing building through the maintenance, rehabilitation and the addition of a new volume. The UNE-EN ISO 14006 ecodesign certification allows us to define the building’s best environmental measures in accordance to its localization. The building’s design definition is adopted according to sustainability criteria that include different phases.

The purpose of the extension is to increase the actual available area for sport and cultural activities. The existing building has a relationship with the neighbors and they have bonding connection with the facility.  This connection between the building and the neighbors is essential to guarantee the use of the spaces, the respect for the facilities and the maintenance of the building.

The proposal for the Rehabilitation of the CMD aims to design a bright and clear volume in the urban landscape of Bilbao. The materials and the appearance of the façade are relevant in order to define the relation between the surrounding buildings and the existing building. The new façade is a skin that surrounds the new vertical cladding and finishes in the roof by opening to the stained glass window. The stained glass window situated in the roof is the same that is in the existing building that is relocated in the new building. Through this element the natural light is introduced to all the inferior floors across the patios. The double skin façade is materialized in a anodized aluminium net over the curtain wall of the Rehabilitation of the CMD.

The skin works as a continuous diffusion layer, providing different natural light reflections and offering privacy to the users inside the new building. The density of the skin is variable according to the orientation, so it offers solar protection in the most exposed façades. At night the volume shows the life inside the building trough the continuous curtain wall and the new, increasing the lightness of the building’s extension.

The outcome for the Rehabilitation of the CMD is a light volume placed on the existing building.
