The purpose of this project is the refurbishment of the Hernani Ertzaintza police station, in order to integrate the police station into the urban environment and make the service to citizens more friendly.

The refurbishment consists of two phases. This first one focuses on external intervention, and a future second phase in which it will intervene in the interior spaces of attention to citizens (waiting room, complaint rooms, etc.).

In this first phase, the outer space for access to the urban fabric is opened, in order to eliminate physical and visual barriers. To do this, the outer perimeter of the enclosure is first modified. Leaving part of the plot open to the city. This facilitates access to the building for users, as well as making a more pleasant transition. Continuing with the perimeter closure, the new closure executed is designed using a system of vertical galvanized steel tubes. These are highly permeable to the eye and that acts as a physical but not visual separator. These elements are lacquered in alternating green tones, following the aesthetics of the original closure of the plot.

The closure is performed by means of tubes arranged “in a staggered fashion” joined by horizontal rims. Of these, one in six is embedded in the ground. Leaving the rest flown and enhancing the feeling of lightness.

On the other hand, and due to the new access configuration, there are two pedestrian crossings, in connection with the main flows of the environment. Which converge in front of the main access. In addition, these walkways are arranged respecting the surrounding trees. At the beginning of each of the two roads, separate bike racks are installed. For the use of both employees and citizens, stimulating sustainable transport.

Finally, the action at the Ertzaintza police station is completed by renovating the lighting installation. In the affected space, by the use of lights located on the sides of the new pedestrian crossings. And the cultivated field of planters along with the new closures.
