PROject description

The intervention focuses on the rehabilitation of the façades of the UPV-EHU Teacher-Training College located in San Sebastian. It is an integrated intervention to replace the whole existing exterior brick layer while maintaining the interior layer. The aim of the assignment was to ensure the stability of the façade, as a consequence of the bad state of the original element. Thermal insulation was included in the façade in order to improve the energy efficiency in accordance to San Sebastian’s “Buildings’ Energy Efficiency and Environmental Quality Municipal Regulation”. The whole façade rehabilitation is achieved from the exterior side so the energy performance of the enclosure is improved and the inconvenience from the construction works is reduced. One of the challenges of the proposal was to maintain the formal characteristics and expression of the original façade. An innovative ventilated façade system was selected in order to improve the energy performance of the building while maintaining the original aspect of the brick façade face. On the other hand, a different material was selected for the rehabilitation of the volumes located in the roof and the façades of the offices. Heat-treated horizontal wooden lath was used as the final element of these volumes. As a result of the façade rehabilitation, the user’s comfort level has been increased because of the decrease in the interior temperature variation and the reduction in the heating consumption.
