In the region of Urdaibai match a number of natural and cultural features that give the area an outstanding interest and define some extremely rare ecosystems in the Basque Country. These factors have determined the declaration of this area as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO (1984).
The drafting of the Master Plan for Use and Management (PRUG) should define the guidelines that ensure the future preservation of Urdaibai.
